Participant Requirements

Drama Class Participation Requirements.

Our classes are structured to ensure that participants of similar ability are grouped together. We try to achieve this by using age group defined classes. This grouping of similar ability is essential for the following reasons...

1. The tutors are able to prepare a class relevant to the participants.

2. Participants are stimulated by working with partners and groups where all can contribute equally.

3. The tutors can support all members of the group equally.

4. The expectation of parents and participants alike is that the classes are made up of individuals of similar ability.

Unfortunately from time to time a participant is unable to fit into the group due to an ability significantly above or below the rest of the group. This may mean that the participant may not be suitable to attend our drama classes.

Alternatively it may mean that the participant attends a class with a lower or higher age range to that of their own or he/she attends Private drama coaching with one of our tutors.

It is at the discretion of the tutor as to whether a participant is suitable to attend the class or not. The Detour Theatre Trust supports the tutors decision on these matters.

FAQ

What size is the class?
Class numbers are usually between 8 and 12 participants. There is some discretion for smaller or larger classes depending on the dynamics of a particular group.

Can I attend the class with my child?
Yes parents are always welcome in the theatre. However, parents watching can be a distraction for some students. Most parents tend to stay for the first class and after that make the most of the free time and go shopping or to a cafe.

What are your expectations on participants behaviour?
The guiding principle we work to is: "We show respect to ourselves, other participants, the tutor and the studio". If there are problems with behaviour in the studio the child is asked to "sit out" an exercise. If there are ongoing problems then the parent is notified. This is extremely rare.

How should we dress?
The classes can be very active at times and while the theatre is clean we do recommend casual clothes that don't restrict movement. Pants are more suitable than dresses/skirts for girls. In the summer the theatre can be hot and in the winter it can be a little chilly. Please dress for the seasons.
